A BMW engine is a damn good engine. Lexus is good, but not as good as the BMW.

I own an 89 BMW 530 and I can tell you that I love the engine on that thing. It is leaking some oil, but it still has great power. As long as you find something that someone took care of, BMW engines are good to go.

bmw makes solid engines. there should be no issues with them. what your concern should be is the transmissions on these cars. some people drive them aggressive, test drive the cars, make sure they shift proper and have your mechanic give it a good look over before you sign any papers for a used vehicle

The 5 series 6 cylinder is also considered bulletproof. I dont know about the v8 (540)
Inline setup, german precision, same base design that goes back two decades, timing chain. It is a bit underpowered compared to the V8 or the lexus. Just make sure it wasnt beat, and it was maintained.

Well all of BMW's engines are great. Here are the ones they offer for the 5-series.
3.0-liter dual overhead cam (DOHC), 24-valve inline 230-horsepower 6-cylinder engine with composite magnesium/aluminum engine block, Valvetronic, and Double-VANOS steplessly variable valve timing
3.0-liter dual overhead cam (DOHC), 24-valve inline turbocharged 300-horsepower 6-cylinder engine with twin-turbo technology, piezo direct injection, and Double-VANOS steplessly variable valve timing
4.8-liter, 360-horsepower 32-valve V-8 engine with 4 overhead camshafts, aluminum engine block and cylinder heads, Valvetronic system, 2-stage air intake manifold, and Double-VANOS steplessly variable valve timing
They are all great engines. Any of them would be good if properly maintained for 200,000 miles. Good luck and make sure you get one that hasn't been beat too hard and has been properly maintained.

There were three engines available in the FIVE Series BMWs. There was a 525i, a 530i, and a 535i with 6 cylinder engine. Then there was a V-8 engine in the 540i. The early V-8 engines had some development problems. The in-line 6 cylinder engines were and still are, very nearly bulletproof if properly maintained and serviced. The 6 cylinder engines should be good for 200,000 miles if properly serviced.
